April results round-up: Clay proves complicated for the form book

March had the ‘Big Two’ to round out the first quarter of the season and with it the transition from hard-courts to the clay. April is caked in the dirt.
This month saw drama aplenty in the first week with some epic Davis Cup clashes and later mid-month the Fed Cup more than delivered too – a post will feature about all the action there soon.
On the main tour however it has been a case of niggling injuries, comeback performances and the ever-present shock or two that have littered the season so far from tournaments big and small.
Let’s cut to the chase on the men’s tour with the big story of Rafa Nadal’s continuing struggles this year: two record runs coming to an end – Monte Carlo to Ferrer and the even more impressive Barcelona streak broken by Almagro – are all the more significant given the surface.
Is there cause for concern for Roland Garros?
Well Madrid still awaits of course and with Djokovic and Murray still dealing with injury hangovers and the still-dangerous Federer on father duty there is promise.
But the likes of April’s title victors Dimitrov, Nishikori and of course Wawrinka (sublime in Monte-Carlo against an impressive Federer) – not to mention the ever-present Ferrer, Berdych and Raonic and Rafa is certainly up against it.
Other title winners in April include Garcia-Lopez (Morocco) and Verdasco (Houston).
The women’s tour doesn’t have a Nadal-esque clay King (Queen), at least not since dear Henin. Instead Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Li Na have fared best – at least come the Parisian crunch.
But with Serena herself absent after that shock loss to Cepelova on the green clay in Charleston at the start of the month, and Azarenka still recovering from that foot injury, other names have come to the fore.
These were not however, the 2014 form players per se, Halep, Bouchard and Kvitova – who all enjoyed Fed Cup success – not to mention Aga Radwanska have been usurped by the older guard this month.
After Petkovic deservedly swept to the Charleston title it has been the likes of Sharapova, Ivanovic and Jankovic vying for the silverwear  – with an honourable mention for Svetlana Kuznetsova who continues to make waves on the biggest of stages at 29 years old.
Alize Cornet, Caroline Garcia and the young Donna Vekic (who you may remember from Birmingham last summer) took titles whilst Cibulkova, Oprandi and Giorgi came oh so close themselves.
